EARL GRAVES of Winterset Dies

J. Earl Graves, one of Madison County's most prominent farmers for many years, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 1961, at Memorial hospital in Winterset, after an extended illness. He was 61 years of age.

Mr. Graves was one of the most influential citizens of Madison County for many years. He was active in a long list of farm organizations and community activities, including the Madison county Livestock and Fair association, of which he had served as secretary since it was organized 14 years ago. He was a member of the Madison County Memorial Hospital association from the early days of that organization, and was serving as its president at the time of his death.

He was a member of the original AAA committee in Madison County, which administered the federal farm program in the county. He was a past president of the Madison County Farm Bureau and was extremely active in its affairs, including the 4-H club fair in which he took a special interest for more than 20 years. He was a past president of the Madiison County Angus Association and a member of the board of directors of the Farmers Cooperative association.

He was a member of the Winterset Methodist Church.

Joseph Earl Graves was a native of Illinois, where he was born in Stark county on March 1, 1899, a son of John W. and Nannie Biggs Graves. He had been a resident of Madison county since 1904.

He was married May 27, 1923, to Madalene Hann, who survives him. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. John Graves of Winterset; a daughter, Mrs. Lois Groth of Winterset; two grandchildren, Marvin and Carolyn Groth; and two sisters, Mrs. Edith Haines of Peru and Mrs. Mary Ham of Winterset.

Funeral services were held Monday from the Winterset Methodist Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. John C. Porath. Burial ws made in the Winterset Cemetery.
