Life Long Resident Died Last Thursday At Age Of 85 Years
Mrs. Sylvia Smith, a life-long resident of Madison county and Winterset, died last Thursday June 9, at Memorial hospital. She was 85 years of age.
Mrs. Smith was born in the southeast part of the county on Oct. 3, 1874. She was the former Sylvia Ann Armstrong, daughter of Robert and Martha Armstrong. As a young woman she taught school in Truro for two years, Beerbauer and Buffalo schools.
She was married at Truro on Jan. 30, 1895, to Jack Smith. They were parents of five children, two sons dying in childhood, Hoyt at the age of 8 years and Hobart at 9 months. Mr. Smith died in 1934.
In early life she joined the old Christian church, in which she was active in church and Sunday school work. In 1912 she joined the Winterset Church of Christ.
She leaves a son, Hugh Smith of Lorimor; two daughters, Mrs. Lucille Patterson of near Winterset and Mrs. Lenore Radakovich of Enumclaw, Wash.; in addition to six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Winterset Christian church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Robert Owens. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
