Funeral services for the late John Givan were held on Thursday, May 16th, at 3 o’clock, from the home of his sister, Mrs. John Handley, on West Washington street. A large gathering of friends, many of whom were former neighbors of the deceased in Grand River township, years ago, were present.
The following obituary was read at the service. John Givan, son of Henry and Jane Givan, was born on June 26, 1854, and departed this life in Denver, Colorado, May 11, 1929, at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 15 days. For the past fifteen years he had made his home in Denver for health reasons. He had been in failing health for the past year and a half, although his last illness was of very short duration. He was converted in early manhood, united with the Methodist church and had lived a consistent Christian life these many years. He was always ready to give aid to any one, or any good cause, in time of need.
He leaves three brothers and three sisters: Robert, of Macksburg; Irvin and Will, of Webster; Mrs. Maggie Kivett, of Macksburg; Mrs. Anna Handley, of Lorimor, and Mrs. John Handley, of Winterset. Besides these are a number of nephews and nieces and a host of friends.
A mixed quartet sang three numbers at the services and the Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of the Methodist church, used as the text for the occasion, a passage, long a favorite of the deceased and chosen by him many years ago for this occasion, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.”
