Mrs. George Potter died Saturday morning, June 14, at her home on North First street, after an illness of four days. She was stricken with a stroke of apoplexy Monday evening, June 9th, about eight o’clock in the evening, and she never regained consciousness. Her death came Saturday morning, at five o’clock.
Mrs. Potter, who was 65 years of age, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Gowins. Hendricks county, Indiana, was the birthplace of Mrs. Potter, and she was the youngest of seven children. The family came to Madison county, when she was a girl, and on the 4th day of January, 1883, she was married to George A. Potter. They made their home in Patterson for many years, Mr. Potter conducting a general store there. Here they raised their seven children, all of whom survive, except Roy, who died in October, 1928.
Mr. and Mrs. Potter and their children were well known in Winterset and Madison county. Some of their children have moved to other communities, and friends from many parts of the state came Monday to pay their final respects to Mrs. Potter. Mrs. Potter belonged to the Methodist church in Patterson, and when she moved to Winterset, transferred her membership to the Winterset church. She was a most faithful member of the church, and attended most of the services. After her death, the children found in her bible her own obituary that she had written; the scripture passages that she wished read, and the three songs that she wished to have sung at her services. Her wishes were carried out in the funeral services, which were conducted by her pastor, the Rev. A. P. Keast, at the Methodist church, Monday afternoon, June 16th, at 2:30 o’clock. Burial was made in the family lot, in the Winterset cemetery.
Mrs. Potter was a member of the Eastern Star, chapter No. 180, Pitzer Relief Corps, No. 117; and the Royal Neighbors of American, Lincoln camp, No. 9531.
The six children surviving Mrs. Potter are John A. Potter of Patterson; Ernest C. Potter of Valley Junction; Mrs. Mina Norman of Van Meter; Mrs. Letitia Don Carlos of Perry; Mrs. Flora Quick of Patterson and Mrs. Marie Boelter of Des Moines. Mr. Potter died on March 27th, 1928, and the eldest son, Roy, died on October 1st, of the same year. Mrs. Potter also leaves nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
More details of her life may be found in the mortuary column, on page 2.
