Peru

Ada Berniece Phillips, 92, of Peru died of congestive heart failure Thursday at Winterset Care Center South. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Truro United Methodist Church, of which she was a member.

Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery in Madison County.

Mrs. Phillips was born in Madison County and had lived there most of her life. She was a retired schoolteacher who had served Quail Trap, Prairie Grove and Garrett County schools. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Garden Club and Women's Society, and was a 4-H leader.

Surviving are a son, Leon of Peru; two daughters, Bethene Stafford of West Des Moines and Paula Nicholson of Hazel Green, Wis.; three sisters, Ardys Whitfield of Pacific, Mo., Mildred Schultz of Truro and Vesta Batten of Carlisle; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul.

Friends may call after 10 a.m. today at Kale Funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m.

Ada Berniece Phillips, 92, of Peru died of congestive heart failure June 15, 2000, at Winterset Care Center South

Funeral services were held Monday, June 19, at the Truro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Shepherd officiating. Burial was at Ebenezer Cemetery (Walnut Township) of rural Peru.

Berniece Phillips was born Oct. 14, 1907, in Madison County to William Alexander and Mary Ethel (Travis) Sawhill. She graduated from Truro High School and attended college in Cedar Falls and Shenandoah. Berniece taught school at Quail Trap, Prairie Grove and Garrett country schools. She married Paul Alton Phillips on Feb. 25, 1934 in New Virginia. A life-time resident of the Peru area, she was a member of the Garden Club, Women’s Society, Truro United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also had been a 4-H leader.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother.

She is survived by a son, Leon Phillips (wife Donna Lee) of Peru; two daughters, Bethene Loree Stafford (husband Robert) of West Des Moines and Paula Louise Nicholson of Hazel Green, Wis.; three sisters, Ardys Elaine Whitfield of Pacific, Mo., Mildred Blanche Schultz of Truro and Vesta Valine Batten of Carlisle; and four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Truro United Methodist Church for Sunday school education.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kale Funeral Home in Truro.
