When but a boy of four years he came with his parents to Clyde, Ohio, and in 1859 he with them removed to Madison county, Iowa, locating near Zion church where he lived until he came to Winterset in 1915.

On Feb. 4, 1875 he was married to Mary Jane Smith, and to them eight children were born, five sons and three daughters, on son, Harvey, dying in infancy. Besides his widow, seven children survive him. They are Charlie and Albert, of Winterset, Mrs. J. F. Wilson of Libertyville, Ill., Mrs. D. B. Adam, and Ross Herman, of Creston, Iowa, Mrs. Beulah Braden, of Winterset, and Walter, who for years has made his home with his parents. He was one of a family of eight children, two brothers and three sisters preceeding him in death.

At an early age he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior, and through the years has lived a faithful consistent Christian life. As a young man he united with the Baptist church at Winterset, of which church he was a member at the time of his death. He also was greatly interested in the Welfare of Zion church, having taught a Sunday school class there for many years. He was a kind husband, a good father, and faithful friend and neighbor, and for him we believe these words were spoken by his savior, "Well done thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of the Lord."
