Otis Leon Roby, Truro

Otis Leon Roby, 69, of Truro died of complications of cancer, Nov. 29, 1997, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services are today at the Truro Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. Richard Harbart of Des Moines and the Rev. Tom Shinkle of Hopkinton will officiate the 1 p.m. service and burial will follow at the Young Cemetery in Truro.

He was born Aug. 20, 1928, in Truro, to Paul Otis and Elvina Louise (Powers) Roby. On Sept. 5, 1952, he married Dolores Haltom at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He was a teacher and coach at several Iowa schools, including East Green, Grand Junction, Colfax, M.F.L. at Monona, Marion, and Sumner. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Army. In 1989, he returned to Truro. He was a member of the Truro Congregational United Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and one brother.

Surviving relatives include his wife; two sons, Randy Roby and wife Yolanda of Albuquerque, N.M., David Roby and wife Kim of Afton; one brother, Paul Roby, Jr. and wife Cleo of Red Oak; three sisters, Betty Williams of Des Moines, Lila Parker and husband Fred of Wick, Ann Parker and husband Bob of Indianola; one sister-in-law, Pauline Roby of Aptos, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to the family who will then donate them to athletic or educational purposes.

OTIS LEON ROBY

Otis Leon Roby, son of Paul Otis and Elvina Louise Powers Roby, was born near Truro on Aug. 20, 1928, and died of cancer Nov. 29, 1997, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 69.

He attended Truro schools, Simpson College and Drake University. He married Dolores Haltom on Sept. 5, 1952 at the Little Brown church in Nashua and they became the parents of two sons, Randy and David.

Mr. Roby was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He taught students and coached in various Iowa schools including East Greene at Grand Junction, Colfax, M.F.L. at Monona, Marion and Sumner before returning to Truro in 1989.

He was preceded in death by his parents, as sister, Shirley Peppmeier and a brother Richard Roby.

Mr. Roby is survived by his wife Dolores Roby of Truro; two sons, Randy Roby and his wife, Yolanda Roby, of Albuquerque, N. M. and David Roby and his wife, Kim Roby, of Afton; four grandchildren, Mark Otis Roby, Matthew Bryant Roby, Brittney Lynn Roby and David Otis Roby; three sisters, Betty Williams of Des Moines, Lila Parker and her husband, Fred Parker, of Wick and Ann Parker and her husband, Bob Parker, of Indianola; a brother, Paul Roby Jr. and his wife, Cleo Roby, of Red Oak; a sister-in-law, Pauline Roby of Aptos, Calif.; as well as other relatives and a host of friends.

Services for Mr. Roby were at 1 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Congregational United Church of Christ where he was a member. The Rev. Richard Harbart and the Rev. Tom Shinkle conducted the services. Organist Doris Johnson accompanied the congregation as they sand The Old Rugged Cross.

Casket bearers were John Peppmeier, Ken Karsten, Jason Walke, Dallas Oberbroeckling, Les Williams and Frank Harris. Interment was in Young Cemetery at Truro. Military rites were by American Legion Post No. 165 of Indianola.

Arrangements were by Kale Funeral Homes in Osceola and Truro.
