The Winterset Madisonian
Winterset, Iowa
January 1929

Henry Harrison Hawk, son of Michael and Catherine Hawk, was born in Lebanon county, Pennsylvania, March 2, 1849, and died at his home in Winterset, Iowa, January 26, 1929, aged 79 years, 10 months and 24 days.

When seven weeks of age his family moved from Pennsylvania to Mendota, Illinois, where he grew to manhood. The spring of 1871, he, with his brother, John's family, left Illinois and settled on his father's farm in Webster township, Madison county, Iowa. January 22, 1875, he was married to Annie Matilda Tapper, in Webster county, Iowa, with whom he lived 54 years and 4 days. Theirs was an exceptionally happy married life. Their love and devotion was never marred by unkind words and actions. The atmosphere of their home radiated kindness and good will to all who crossed its threshold.

The spring of 1878 he moved to his new prairie home, seven miles west of Winterset, on the Bluff road, where he lived until he came to Winterset in 1901. He has always been interested in the work of the farm which he still owned. He was highly esteemed and respected in the community where he lived, being ever ready to help friends and neighbors in every possible way, as well as all work for the benefit of the public good.

God gave him no children and thus he became a father to Harry L. Hawk and Floy M. Walker, two motherless children, who were raised in the home and have preceded him to glory. After the death of his brother, John, in 1888, he took the place of a father to his brother's children, and since the death of their mother, they called "Uncle Henry's" home, their home.

He had been afflicted for a number of years with heart trouble, which ultimately caused his death. Four years ago he was seriously ill for several months and never regained his former health. Although confined to his room for many months, he was always patient and cheerful, welcoming the calls of his friends.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his beloved wife, one sister, Mrs. Emma C. Green, of cherryvale, Kansas, twenty-two nieces and nephews, thirty great nieces and nephews and several great great nieces and nephews, beside a host of friends.

The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church in Winterset January 28th, at 2:00 o'clock. Rev. Paul Main Fowler, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, officiated. Interment was made in the Winterset cemetery.
