John L. McGinnis Dies At 95 Years

John L. McGinnis was born in Madison county on November 25, 1859, a son of Jonathan and Rebecca Cason McGinnis. His father was a pioneer Christian minister, and his mother was the daughter of Thomas Cason who in 1847 bought the claim which Hiram Hurst, first white man to live in Madison county, had staked out in Crawford township.

When he was 4 years old, Mr McGinnis moved with his parents to Adair county, where his active life was spent in farming. He was active in the Louck's Grove Christian church there, serving as Sunday school superintendent for 27 years.

He was married Feb. 14, 1884 to Cora Kirlin in Adair County. The were parents of seven children, one dying in infancy.

The wife and mother died in 1939. Since then he had made his home in Winterset.

Mr. McGinnis was the last surviving member of a family of 12 children. He leaves four daughters, Mrs. Eva Glasscock, who had made her home here with her father. Mrs Ina Stearns of Davenport, Mrs. Lula Lewis and Mrs. Alda Flood of Winterset; 2 sons, Raymond McGinnis of Creston and Floyd McGinnis of Casey; 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
