Mariam Dowler Brown, Winterset

Miriam Cosand Dowler Brown, 82, Winterset, died of a heart ailment Aug. 13, 1997 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. Funeral services were Aug. 16 at the Collins Funeral Home in Winterset with the Parton (Pastor) Jon Gaul officiating. Burial followed at the Peru Cemetery.

She was born in Peru on Dec. 19, 1914 to Floyd and Vava Gladys (Delaplain) Cosand. She graduated from Winterset High School in 1932. She married Clark B Dowler. She later married John E. Brown on Oct. 7, 1972 in Pitzer. She was a homemaker and a retired librarian at the Winterset Public Library where she was the head librarian for a number of years. She was a lifetime resident of Madison County and belonged to the Earlham Rebekah Lodge and the Pitzer United Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father; both husbands, and two brothers.

Surviving relatives include three sons, John Dowler of Van Meter, David Dowler and wife Lynn of Ester, Alaska, and Charles Dowler and wife Peggy of Norwalk; one daugher, Ann Dowler Newbury and husband Max of Winterset; her step-mother, Violet Cosand Messaros of Calif.; one step-son Jack Brown and wife Marljke of Greenfield; one stepdaughter, Delores Brown East and husband John of Eufaula, Okla; one foster son, Merle Bancroft and wife Shirley of Great Falls, Mont.; one sister, Evelyn Shade Eckles of Winterset; one brother, the Rev. Dale Cosand of N.Y. City, N. Y.; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four foster grandchildren, and five foster great-grandchildren.

Memoials may be directed to the Friends of Winterset Public Library or Earlham Care.
