George W. Stirts, Marshalltown

Millitary graveside services by American Legion Post #184 for George W. Stirts, 94, were held Mon., Dec. 17 at Peru Cemetery, Peru with the Rev. John Shaull officiating. Stirts died December 13 at Iowa Veteran's Home, Marshalltown.

The son of George and Loretta (Snook) Stirts, George William Stirts was born October 20, 1896 in Appanoose County. He married Doris H. Hoover December 23, 1920 in Des Moines. coming from Des Moines, he lived in rural Peru from 1962 to 1986 and then moved to the veteran's home. He was a charter member of the Baldwin-Patterson Post of American Legion in Des Moines, a World War I veteran and the former Superintendent of Buildings, Grounds and Equipment of Camp Dodge for over 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include a son, Hugh H. Stirts of Ft. Garland, Col.; two daughters, Betty J. Lenard of Sun City, Calif. and Sarah Speirs of Des Moines; a half-brother, Bill Long of Ottumwa; a sister, Anne Cornilson of Unionville, Mo.; ten grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the family.
