Death of Charles A. Mills

Winterset and Madison county residents were shocked to hear of the unexpected death of Charles A. Mills, about 7 o’clock Monday morning, November 3d. Mr. Mills had dressed, and when Mrs. Mills came downstairs a few minutes later, found him sitting in a chair, as if he were asleep. She could not arouse him and she summoned a physician, who stated that his death was caused by apoplexy.

Mr. Mills, who was 61 years of age, had spent his entire life in Madison county. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert C. Mills, and was one of a family of eight children. When a youth, the family made their home in Douglas township. He was married to Lora Alice Brinson on September 9, 1888. They moved to Winterset and here Mr. Mills engaged in the carpenter trade for a number of years. For the past twenty-six years he had been connected with the schools of Winterset, as caretaker, first at the South Ward building, and later in the new high school building. He had assisted with the work in the manual training department and with making the equipment for the Smith-Hughes department. The high school students and the faculty paid their final tributes to Mr. Mills at the funeral services, held at the Church of Christ, Wednesday afternoon, and marched in a group past the casket and laid a sprig of arbivitae on the casket. Five members of the high school faculty and assistant caretaker served as pall bearers: Messrs. Henry, Faust, Lillard, Johnson, Rose and Patton.

Rev. H. L. Olmstead conducted the funeral services, which were held at two o’clock, and he was assisted by the Rev. Paul M. Fowler, pastor of the Presbyterian church. The Knights of Pythias, of which he was a member, attended in a group, and assisted with the services at the cemetery.

Mr. Mills served for 31 years as a member of the fire department, and only retired last year when his health prevented him from further service. He was also a member of the Church of Christ.

Mr. and Mrs. Mills were the parents of four children: Ralph, Ray and Charles, of Winterset, and Mrs. Alice Herhold, of Chicago. These children, with the mother survive him. He is also survived by two brothers, Claude, of Winterset, and Fred of Des Moines, and four sisters, Mrs. Ella Hardy, Mrs. Minnie Koehler and Mrs. Flossie Welch, of Winterset, and Mrs. Stella Wilson, of Des Moines. More details of his life may be found in the mortuary column.

MORTUARY - Charles A. Mills

Charles Adam Mills was born in Madison county, November 23, 1868, and died at his home on West Court avenue, November 3, 1930, at the age of 61 years, 11 months and 10 day.

He was a son of Albert C. and Mary A. Mills. Eight children, William E., Charles A., Ella Hardy, Fred, Minnie Koehler, Stella Wilson, Flossie Welch and Claude, were born to this union. William E. died in August, 1889; his mother in February, 1908, and his father in October, 1926.

He spent all his life in and near Winterset. He was united in marriage to Lora Alice Brinson, on September 9, 1888, and to this union were born four children: Ralph O., Ray, Alice Herhold and Charles.

He spent the early years of his manhood farming in Douglas township, and later he and his family moved to Winterset, where he worked at the carpenter trade for a number of years. He helped to build a number of the nice old homes in Winterset. For the past twenty-six years he has been connected with the schools of Wintrset as caretaker, first at the South Ward building, and later at the new high school building. He was so interested in the school that it was a second "home" to him. He enjoyed the contact with the young people and it kept him young and ever interested in the coming generations. There he watched his three sons and daughter go through school. He was always cheerful as he went about his work and full of pride concerning it.

He was a member of the Winterset fire department from 1898 to 1929. He was very faithful to his duties and was made assistant chief and later chief. He served in that capacity for years, finally retiring in 1929 on account of ill health. At that time the members of the fire department gave a banquet in his honor and presented him with a silver cup in recognition of his faithful service.

He united with the Church of Christ in the year 1890 and although he did not attend frequently, her was intensely interested in the welfare of the church and was ever anxious that his children identify themselves with the church and assist in the good work in every way possible. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge.

He was a home lover, always kind and considerate of his family, a true companion to his wife and a real 'pal' to his sons and daughter.
