Death of Charles A. Harris

Charles A. Harris, a former resident of Winterset, died Monday, April 22, at the home of his sister, Mrs. Ray King, on East Buchanan street. Mr. Harris had been in poor health for two years and his condition had been critical for a number of months. A few weeks ago, he was brought from Mississippi, where he had recently lived, to Winterset, and since that time he had been at the home of his sister.

Mr. Harris, who was 35 years of age, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Harris, and was born December 13, 1893. His early life was spent in Winterset where he attended the public schools and was graduated from the high school in May, 1913. He was one of the first students to graduate from the commercial department, which had just been instituted in the high school, and ranked among the highest in his class. Shortly after finishing school, he went to Carroll, and later to Hastings, Nebraska. He was married to Marjorie Corlach, of Mankato, Minnesota, on February 14, 1918. At the beginning of the World war he enlisted in the United States army and served as a sergeant in Company C of the 212th Engineers.

He was employed after the war as a traveling salesman in Nebraska, but on account of his health moved to Jackson, Mississippi, two years ago. Finally he was forced to give up his work altogether. He suffered intensely during the last few months of his life, but showed the same fighting spirit which had been characteristic of him as an athlete, soldier and a businessman.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, No. 317, and Elks Lodge No. 159, located at Hastings, and was also a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, his father, his sister, Mrs. King and other relatives and friends.

The Rev. A. P. Keast conducted the funeral services at Tidrick's funeral home, Wednesday, April 24 at 3 o'clock, and burial was made in the Winterset Cemetery.
