Mrs. Mary Hays

Mary Rosetta, the youngest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Whitenack, was born in a farm home in Madison county, Iowa, February 27, 1858, and died at her home in Earlham, May 4, 1929, at the age of 71 years.

Mrs. Hays grew to womanhood and lived her entire life until about 16 years ago, on the farm where she was born, situated just west of Worthington church. She was converted during a revival meeting, held by the pastor Rev. H. C. Preston, in December, 1889. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Worthington, at which place she retained her membership up to the time of her death. She loved her church. She served her people of the community in various official capacities in church and Sunday school.

She taught in the public schools of Madison county for a number of years, finally having to give up that work to care for her aged parents.

To know her was to love her, and it was said that she was always thoughtful and self-sacrificing in her devotion to others, so long as her health permitted.

On December 12, 1901, she was united in marriage to George Riley Hays, who preceded her in death on June 23, 1917. She was the youngest of eight children, all of whom have preceded her in death, except one sister, Mrs. Anna Myers, who made her home with her and cared for her during the last two years of her life.

The passing away of Mary at this timne, leaves to mourn her departure, her one sister, Mrs. Anna Myers, fifteen nephews and thirteen nieces.
