James Ralston, son of Samuel Shannon and Mary Ann Ralston was born July 1, 1845 in Lincoln county, Missouri.

His boyhood until the age of 15 was spent in the vicinity in which he was born. In 1860 his father being a Union sympathizer, the family removed to Scott county, Iowa, in which locality he grew to manhood.

On January 4, 1866 he was united in marriage to Margaret Jamison. To this union was born three children, Mrs. A. R. Pattison of Schaller, Iowa; D. S. Ralston of Earlham and F. N. Ralston of Des Moines. All of these survive him.

The family resided on a farm in Scott county until they removed to Earlham in 1912, where they have since made their home until his ill health necessitated his being placed in a hospital in Des Moines in April 1929. He spent several months in hospitals at that time but was later removed to a private home where he was cared for until the time of his death.

When a young man he joined the United Presbyterian church of Le Claire Prairie. On coming to Earlham he transferred his membership to the Presbyterian church of this place, of which he was a member at the time of his death.

His wife preceded him in death October 22, 1930.

He passed away September 19th, 1931 aged 86 years, 2 months and 18 days. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.

DEATH SUMMONS MR. JAMES RALSTON

80 Year Old Man Had Been Respected Citizen of This Community Since 1912

Following an illness of several years, Mr. James Ralston passed away Saturday morning at Des Moines where he had been under treatment. For nearly twenty years Mr. Ralston has been a highly respected citizen of Earlham. Mrs. Ralston preceded him in death October 22, 1930.

The remains were brought to Earlham Saturday afternoon and funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Peter Bock officiating. Interment was in Earlham cemetery. the following brief life biography was read:
