Death of Mrs. George Grout

Mrs. George Grout, a pioneer resident of Winterset, and Madison county, died at the Winterset hospital Friday morning, September 25th, at the age of 74 years. It is thought that Mrs. Grout had a slight stroke on Monday, September 21st, and this caused her to fall and break her hip. Mrs. Grout had been residing with her daughter, Mrs. Worth Alexander, and she was taken to the Winterset hospital for treatment. All possible care was given her, but she continued to grow weaker, and she died a few days later.

Mrs. Grout was the former Miss Luella Compton, and was born at Carlisle, but came to Winterset in 1862, with her parents. Her father Joseph Compton operated the Buffalo Flour Mills, just south of Winterset, for a number of years. She was married to George M. Grout in 1878 and they lived on a farm in Scott township until 1907 when they came to Winterset. Mr. Grout died in 1919. Mrs. Grout leaves five children: Mrs. Grace Blake, Ray Nelson Grout, Mrs. Elsie Alexander and DeLos Grout of Winterset, and Walter of Sioux falls, South Dakota.

The Rev. A. P. Keast, pastor of the Methodist church, conducted her funeral services, Sunday afternoon, September 27th, at Ramsey Richards funeral home at 3 o’clock and burial was in the Winterset cemetery. More details of her life will be given in the mortuary column.

OBITUARY - Luella Grout

Luella Compton, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Salisbury Compton, was born on June 28, 1857 at Carlisle, Warren county, Iowa. She came with her family to Winterset in 1862, and this county has been her home until her death, which took place on Friday morning, September 24, 1931, at the age of 74 years. Her father, Joseph Compton, with his brother operated the Buffalo Flour Mill, just south of Winterset for many years.

She was married on December 25, 1878, to George M. Grout. They lived on a farm in Scott township until 1907, when they moved to Winterset, where Mr. Grout was in business until his death, which occurred in 1919. There came to bless their home six children, David Chester, who died at the age of two years; Mrs. Grace Blake of Winterset; Walter Frederick of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Ray Nelson Grout, Mrs. Elsie Alexander, and DeLos Grout, of Winterset. Besides her five children, she also leaves six grandchildren and many friends. Mrs. Grout is the last member of her immediate family.

She many years ago united with the United Brethren church at Buffalo, later transferring her membership to Providence Chapel, where it remained through the years. Because of her inability to attend church since coming to reside in Winterset, she had never changed her church membership. She was a devout Christian, and her faith in Christ stood by her till the end of the earthly pilgrimage, and in this faith she has gone on before. She loved her home, her intimate friends, and her family and in these found her delight.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
