Death of Willis M. White

Willis M. White, a well known resident of Madison county, died last Thursday, January 31st, at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines. He had been in poor health for a number of years but became much worse several weeks ago. Twenty-five years ago he had an attack of gall stones from which he never recovered. In 1926 he had an extended illness, and two weeks ago, he again became critically ill. It was thought that an operation would prove beneficial, but the doctors found, when they operated January 26th, that cancer had developed. He became suddenly worse Tuesday night, and from then he grew weaker.

Mr. White came to this county with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Abraham White, when he was a boy four years of age, and they lived in the Fairview neighborhood until he was a young man. His father was a Civil war veteran, and they came to this county in a covered wagon. They endured many hardships of pioneer life. He was a true sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Later, they moved to a farm near Barney, and here he was married to Miss Harriet A. Simpson of Barney, in 1890. He and his family have made their home on their farm in Madison township, for the past nineteen years.

Mr. White is survived by his wife and three children, Orville and Mrs. Leroy Cox of Winterset, and Vernon at home. He also leaves two brothers and three sisters.

The Rev. A. R. Weed, pastor of the Worthington church, and the Rev. W. C. Porter, pastor of the United Presbyterian church, conducted the funeral services at the Worthington church, Sunday, February 3, at 1:30 o'clock, and burial was made in the church cemetery. More details of his life may be found in the mortuary column.

Willis Morgan White

Willis Morgan White was born in Schiller county, Missouri, February 17, 1863, and passed away January 31, 1929, aged 65 years, 11 months and 14 days. When four years of age he moved with his parents to Madison county, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. He lived with his parents in the Fairview neighborhood until he grew to be a young man. For a number of years he lived near Barney, with his parents.

February 20, 1890, he was married to Harriet A. Simpson, of Barney, with whom he lived 39 years, 11 months and 12 days. To this union were born five children, two sons and three daughters, two daughters having preceded him in death, Birdie May, who died in infancy and Beulah E. Bush, who died 9 years ago.

He had been a sufferer for a number of years, but in the last two weeks he gradually declined and grew steadily worse, until the spirit slipped away and the earthly life was brought to a close at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines. He had always been interested in the work of the farm, where he had lived for nineteen years. He was highly esteemed and respected in the community where he lived, being ever ready to help friends and neighbors in every possible way, as well as work for the welfare of the public. He took the place of a father to his granddaughter, Velma Bush, who was left motherless and fatherless at the age of six.

He leaves to mourn his loss, a faithful wife, two sons, Orville, of Winterset, Vernon at home, and one daughter, Mrs. Roy Cox of Winterset and eight grandchildren; also two brothers, Jake and Frank of Stillwater, Oklahoma; and three sisters Nettie Hays and Emily Shaffer of Laurel, Montana, and Alta Bruett of Winterset, and a host of friends and neighbors.
