James W. McGlothlen

James W., son of Jonathan and Mary McGlothlen, was born in Fountain county, Indiana, Nov. 12, 1850 and his earthly career came to a close on May 20, 1922, he therefore being 72 years, 6 months and 8 days of age at the time of his departure. He was the second son of a family of six boys, and received his early education in a log school house in his native county. While yet a boy, his father died and he was forced to go to work and make a living.

In 1871 he came to Iowa and rented land in Polk county. Four years later he moved to Webster township, Madison county, where he became well known as a prosperous and successful farmer.

On July 4, 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Rice of Polk county, and the remainder of his journey was made with her as his loving, sympathetic and helpful companion. Mr. McGlothlen was fond of travel, and he found much enjoyment in three trips to California. He was an admirer of the beautiful and the good in life.

He was a charter member of the Christian church of Webster township, and a short time ago transferred his membership to the Church of Christ in Winterset. He was a man of few words, sympathetic nature, childlike humility and pleasant and hopeful in his disposition.

He retired from farming about two years ago and moved to Winterset, where he continued to reside to the time of his death. He was in failing health for several months.

He leaveds to cherish in memory the devoted companion and one brother, Frank, and other relatives and a large circle of friends. Funeral services were conducted May 22 at two o'clock by E. B. Chancellor, at the Church of Christ. Interment in Winterset cemetery.
