Winterset Madisonian - April 1923

Zillah Frances Darnall, daughter of Gideon and Amanda Darnall, was born in Boone county, Indiana, Jan. 15, 1845 and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edwin Hoots, in Winterset, April 13, 1923, having reached the age of 78 years, 2 months and 28 days. She came with her father to Madison county when 15 years of age. She was united in marriage to Benjamin Franklin Ragan, March 4, 1869. They were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding March 4, 1919, and he passed away eleven months later.

Eight children were born to this union, one son, William passing away in infancy. The surviving ones are: George F. Ragan, Redwood Falls, Minn.; Mrs. O.M. Gentry, Morgan, Minn.; Lawrence E. Ragan, Mitchellville, Iowa; Charles F. Ragan, St. Charles, Mrs. Frank Brock, Mrs. Edwin Hoots and Ben Ragan of Winterset.

She became a christain in early life and was for a time a member of the West Star church and later became a member of the Church of Christ at Winterset, continuing in this fellowship to the time of her departure.

She leaves to miss her presence and cherish her memory, the three daughters, four sons, one sister, Mrs. Lucy Roy of Dayton, Wash.; 21 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Other more distant relatives and a host of friends and neighbors join these in sympathy and treasured memories.

Funeral services were conducted from the Church of Christ on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. E. B. Chancellor assisted by Rev. D. J. Shenton, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
