Mrs. Abigail Van Dusen

Mrs. Abigail Van Dusen, age 83, died Friday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. H. Finney, of Winterset, Ia., following a three weeks illness. Mrs. Van Dusen was the wife of the late Henry Van Dusen and was born in the southern part of Indiana, September 23, 1838. She had lived for many years in and near New Carlisle, this county, leaving to make her home with her daughter four years ago.

Besides the one daughter, those surviving are five sons, Mark, Verne and Charles, of South Bend, Clinton, of New Carlisle, and George of Winterset, and two step-daughters, Mrs. M. Mafitt, of River Park, and Mrs. Lydia Bennett, of New Carlisle. The body will be brought to the home of Clinton Van Dusen on Sunday and funeral services will be held at Olive chapel Monday afternoon at 2 O'clock. Burial will be at Olive Chapel cemetery.

Mrs. Henry Van Dusan (sic)

Abigail Jessup, daughter of Isaac and Mary Jessup, was born in Switzerland County, Indiana, September 23, 1838 and her earthly career came to a close after 84 years, 4 months 23 days, the end coming on Friday, February 16, 1923.

Her life was largely spent in the neighborhood in which she was born, where many close ties and enduring friendships were formed and cultivated.

On May 31, 1857 she was united in marriage to Henry Van Dusan, and to this union were born eight children, six of whom are living. Surviving ones are: George M. of Winterset, Iowa; Clinton V., Of new Carlisle, Indiana; Mark V., Vern V., and Charles W., of South Bend, Indiana; Mrs. H. H Fenney (sic) of Winterset, Iowa.

Twenty-eight years ago the companion passed away, but she continued to make her home in the native state until five years ago, at which time she came to Winterset to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Finney.

While yet in girlhood she united with the Christian church and continued, in the fellowship of the same until the time her death.

Three weeks ago she fell, breaking a limb. This, coupled with her age, proved too much for her strength. Her suffering was intense and constant but she worked with much patience.

Besides the five sons and one daughter, she leaves to hold her in fond memory ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She also counted among her friends although came to know her.

Brief funeral services were held at the Finney home on West Fillmore street on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by E. B. Chancellor. Members of the family left with the body on the afternoon train for new Carlisle, Indiana, where the final service will be held burial will be made.
