Mary Bean Mapes, wife of E. P. Mapes, died at her home in Dexter on May 11th at the age of 73; death following a stroke of paralysis which occurred on April 28th.
Mrs. Mapes was well known to many people in the vicinity, having lived at one time on what is known as the Vanatta farm, three miles east of Winterset. The family moved from here to Dallas county, and later to Dexter.

May 20, 1920Mary Beam was born in Holmes Co., Ohio, November 21st, 1846 and died in Dexter, Iowa, May 11th, 1920, aged 73 years, 5 months and 20 days. She was the last of a family of four girls to pass to the great beyond.
At the age of 20 she removed with her parents to Wayne Co., Ohio, later to Madison Co., Iowa in 1876 and to ---- Dexter where she has lived ever since.
She was married in Dexter to E. P. Mapes February 26th, 1880. The husband and one son, H. V. survive to mourn the loss of an affectionate wife and mother; also four grandchildren, and a large number of nephews and nieces.
Mrs. Mapes was converted when 18 years of age and united with the Christian Church at Holmesville, Holmes Co., Ohio. The past 27 years she was a member of the Methodist church at Mt. Vernon and Dexter. She loved the Church, but during the past few years by reason of infirmities had been deprived of the privileges of the services.
April 28th she had a stroke of paralysis which resulted in her death. She was a patient sufferer and the end came without a struggle. “For her to die was gain.” Mrs. Mapes was devoted to her family and beloved by all who knew her. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
Largely attended funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist Church conducted by Rev. E. E. Ilgrenfritz, after which the body was laid to rest in the Dexter Cemetery.
