James Smith Dead

Mr. James Smith, an old pioneer of this county living just west of Winterset, died last Saturday morning (August 13) at 9 o’clock, after a long illness. The funeral was held at the M. E. church in this city Sunday afternoon, Rev. Riheldaffer preaching the sermon to a large congregation.

James Smith, son of George and Barbara Smith, was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, February 15, 1816. At the age of four years he moved with his parents to Harrison county, Ohio, where the family resided for seven years, moving from there to Coshocton county, Ohio in 1827. At this place he remained on the same farm for forty-three years. In 1849 he was married to Miss Sarah Ann Stubbs. To them were born ten children, two of whom died in infancy, and Mrs. Smith died September 9, 1863. He was again married December 28, 1867 to Miss Martha Johnston. To this union were born five children.

Deceased moved to Iowa in 1869 and settled in Madison county where he died. He joined the M. E. church when but twelve years old. For twenty-five years he was a class-leader in his church, and served in other official capacities. He was a very exemplary, christian gentleman, universally loved and respected. He died as a member of the Winterset M. E. church. His second wife died December 13, 1896.

This, in brief, is the history of a noble man. He will be missed in this community, where he was widely known. “Peace o his ashes.”
