Former Madison County Sheriff Charles H. Neidt of 517 N. First St. died Friday, January 4, (1980), at Madison County Memorial Hospital at the age of 89. Mr. Neidt was appointed deputy sheriff of Madison County in 1935 and was elected sheriff in 1942, serving for six years.

Born on March 8, 1890 in Clarke County, he was the son of William H. and Anna Burgus Neidt. On January 4, 1917, he was united in marriage to Lucille Lynch in Des Moines. His wife survives him.

Mr. Neidt, who was a resident of Madison County for 80 years, received his B.A. degree from Des Moines College in 1916. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge and served as Master of the Lodge in Winterset in 1947. In addition, he was a Worthy Patron of the Winterset Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and was a member of the First United Methodist church.

Survivors also include a son, Charles O. Neidt of Fort Collins, Colo.; a daughter Josephine Cleven of Tucson, Ariz.; a brother, Frank Neidt of Truro; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his
parents.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, January 7, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Byron Ayers officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery with Masonic Rites conducted by Evening Star Lodge No. 43.
