LAVERNE BLACK

Laverne Black was born July 23, 1930 in Des Moines, Iowa. He died November 4, 1975, at Mercy hospital in Des Moines.

He lived his childhood in Norwalk and attended school there, graduating in 1947. He attended Wartburg college two years during which time his parents, Eugene and Mayme Black moved to Earlham to operate a Chevrolet Agency.

He was married September 10, 1950 to Nancy Glascock of Norwalk and to this union were born two children: Kathy, now Mrs. Robert Cline of Winterset, and Steve, a senior of Earlham.

Verne, as most people knew him, served in the Marine Corps from October 1951 to October 1953 and upon discharge returned to Earlham to join his mother in the operation of Earlham Motor Company. The business was sold in 1945 and since that time Verne has been employed in Des Moines, the last 15 years at Hawkeye Security Ins. Co. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Winterset.

Survivors include his wife Nancy, a daughter Kathy Cline, a son Steve, a sister Mrs. Lola Bruett of Winterset, and one grandchild.
