Was Former Supervisor and Treasurer of Madison
County
Charles H. Hochstetler, prominent Penn township farmer and former Madison county official, died Thursday, April 30, in the Dexter hospital. He was 80 years of age, and had been ill but a short time.
Mr. Hochstetler had lived all his 80 years in Madison county. He was always active in community affairs, serving as Madison county treasurer and Madison County supervisor, in addition to filling township and and school offices. He was also active in the Penn Center Methodist church.
He was born in Penn township May 18, 1872, a son of Jacob M. and Hilpha Hochstetler. With the exception of six years in Winterset, his life was spent on the home place in Penn township. He attended grade school there, and later studied at the Dexter Normal school and a business college in Des Moines.
He was married Oct. 19, 1904 to Lillian L. May of Stuart.
In addition to his membership in the Penn Center church, where he served on the board and various committees over the years, he was a member of the Masonic lodge at Dexter, where he recently was awarded a 50-year certificate.
Surviving are his wife; four children, Paul W. Hochstetler of Earlham, Mrs. Eva M. Towns of Creston, Francis B. Hochstetler of Dexter, and Mrs. Anna M. Brown of Earlham; 14 grandchildren; and one great grandson. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Eva Callison of Cresco, and Mrs. Lula Davies of Tacoma, Wash., and a brother, Everett of Maryville, Mo.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Penn Center church conducted by the Rev. Clyde King. Burial was made in the Dexter cemetery.

May 7, 1953Charles Henry Hochstetler, son of Jacob M. and Hilpah Hochstetler, was born in Madison county, May 18, 1872, and passed away at the age of 80 years, 11 months and 12 days, after a short illness in the Dexter hospital.
He attended grade school in Penn township, then Dexter Normal School in Dexter going on to attend business college in Des Moines.
On October 19, 1904 he was united in marriage to Lillian L. May of Stuart. To this union four children were born.
With the exception of six years in Winterset, his entire life was spent on the home place in Penn township. He had been very active in community affairs, having served as County Treasurer, County Supervisor, as well as several township offices and was secretary of the school board at the time of his death.
He was a member of the Penn Center Methodist church, active in his church duties having served on the church board and various committees through the years.
He was a member of Mt. Tabor Lodge No. 293 A.F. & A.M. of Dexter, Iowa and his lodge had recently honored him with a fifty-year certificate.
He leaves his wife, Lillian; four children: Paul W. of Earlham; Mrs. Eva M. Towns, of Creston; Francis B. of Dexter; and Mrs. Anna M. Brown, of Earlham; 14 grandchildren, and one great grandchild; also two sisters: Mrs. Eva Callison of Cresco; and Mrs. Lula Davies, of Tacoma, Washington; one brother, Everett of Maryville, Missouri; one sister, Mary B. preceded him in death; also a host of other relatives and many friends.
Funeral at Penn Center church 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 3. Burial in Dexter cemetery.
