CHARLES ROWE Died Saturday

Charles Rowe, a Winterset clothier since 1897 and a civic leader of this community for many years, died Saturday, Sept. 7 (1957), at his home in Winterset, following an extended period of failing health. He was 83 years of age.

Mr. Rowe was a native of Davis county, where he was born June 8, 1874, a son of David G. and Sarah Rowe. The family soon moved to the Macksburg area of Madison county, where his youth and early life was spent.

When he was 17 years old he started work in a general store in Macksburg, continuing there until 1897, when he came to Winterset to enter the employ of Charles McMillen in the clothing business here. They soon entered into a partnership, and the store was widely known under the firm name of McMillen and Rowe for many years. Following the death of Mr. McMillen, the store became the Chas. Rowe Clothing company.

Mr. Rowe had completed 60 years in the clothing business here last February. For the last 30 years, Jerome Wright had been associated with him in the business which always has been conducted in the same location on the west side of the square.

Mr. Rowe had been a member of the Winterset school board, and for many years was a member of the official board of the Winterset Methodist church, where he had been a member since 1907.

He was a member of the city park board, and was treasurer of the Winterset Cemetery association. He was a charter member of the Winterset Rotary club, serving as its treasurer for 34 years. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, honored with a 50-year certificate in the Masonic lodge. In addition, he had been a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine since 1911. His activities embraced numerous other community and civic enterprises.

Mr. Rowe was married on Dec. 22, 1895, to Jessie Lee, of Macksburg. Mrs. Rowe survives her husband. He also leaves two daughters, Mrs. Mary Lee Zeller of Kew Gardens, New York, and Mrs. Mable Lee Patzig of Des Moines; three grand-daughters, Mrs. Robert Kerr of Wilkes Barre, Penn., Mrs. John Carlson of Wellesley Hills, Mass., and Elizabeth Zeller at home and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday from the Winterset Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. Walter Samp, a former pastor here, and the present pastor, the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
