JOHN MARTIN BERNAU

John Martin Bernau, son of William and Wilhelmina Bernau, was born on August 30, 1890, and passed away at his home at Earlham on July 12, 1955 at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 12 days.

His early life was spent on a farm south of DeSoto. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church of Van Meter.

On January 3, 1912 he was united in marriage to Dosha Junkin of Dexter, Iowa, and to this union two sons and two daughters were born. One son passed away in infancy.

The past 36 years Mr. and Mrs. John Bernau lived on their farm northeast of Earlham.

Jack's joy in life was his farm work which was both his occupation and hobby.

Since his retiement he enjoyed the visits and letters from his children, grandchildren and friends.

In addition to his wife, he leaves to mourn his passing his three children, Ila of Ogden; William of Corona Del Mar, California; and Vida of Ottumwa; nine grandchildren, Joan of Des Moines; Bud, U. S. Air force Base, Anchorage, Alaska; Rowena, Mary Jean, Larry, Ross and Sherry of Ogden; and William and Tari Dawn of Ottumwa; and one great grandson, Marc of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Brothers and sisters surviving are: Ida Radke of Van Meter; Hulda White of Winterset; August Bernau of Bode; Martha Clayton of Dallas Center; Laura Jurgensen of Adel; and Lena Addy of Des Moines.

In addition there are many nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held on Thursday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran church of Van Meter, and burial was made in Earlham Cemetery.

Jack Bernau Funeral Thursday Afternoon

John Martin (Jack) Bernau died Tuesday morning at his home northeast of Earlham. He was 64 years old. Mr. Bernau had been in ill health for several years. He is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Lutheran church south of Van Meter. In case of rainy weather, services will be held in the Earlham Presbyterian church, as the roads have all been newly graded in the Trinity church neighborhood.

A memorial fund has been established for those who might wish to contribute. Burial will be in the Earlham cemetery.
