August 1924Nellie Berkey
Nellie M. daughter of Thomas and Katherine Hodge, was born in New Liberty, Scott County, Iowa, on March 22nd, 1861.
In her young womanhood she taught school, and with that patience and sincerity which mark all good teachers, she guided her pupils in the best things in life.
At the home of her parents in Davenport, Iowa, she was united in marriage with Alvin G. Berkey, on June 15, 1887 and during the following thirty-seven years Mr. and Mrs. Berkey have walked together through shadow and sunshine, each gladly bearing with the other whatever lot their Lord deemed best for them.
Mr. and Mrs. Berkey removed to Washington county in 1893 and there spent the following seven years during which time Mrs. Berkley united with the Bethel Presbyterian Church. They next moved to Madison County in the spring of 1900 and lived at Fairview until 1919, when they came to Earlham to make their home in the comfortable little house where in the quiet of the Sabbath, August 10th, 1924, Mrs. Berkey laid down the burden of a frail, tired body, and answered the call of her Master.
Mrs. Berkey loved her church and was a busy and faithful member. While living at Fairview she organized and taught a young ladies class in Sunday School for a number of years, and was local Secretary of the Fairview Missionary Society. On coming to Earlham she adjusted herself to its conditions and was the same faithful conscientious worker until sickness made it impossible for her to take an active part. Even then her interest did not waver, but she did with her heart in prayer that which her hands were unable to do. So till the end with her life in unison with the Savior's she did not waver nor fail.
