George L. Montross, Winterset

George Lloyd Montross, 80, of Winterset, died of cancer June 27, 1998, at Madison County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 30, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Winterset with the Rev. Dr. Mary Pope officiating, assisted by Pastor Jon Gaul. Burial was in Winterset Cemetery. Military graveside services were conducted by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142 of Winterset. A Masonic graveside service also was conducted by Evening Star Lodge 43 of Winterset.

George Montross was born Nov. 12, 1917, in Sloan to George Lloyd and Xenia (Buchner) Montross. A resident of Winterset for the past 76 years, he graduated from Winterset High School in 1935 and from Grinnell College in 1939. He also was a World War II Navy veteran. He married Patricia Fowler on Feb. 4, 1939, at Kirksville, Mo.

George was a member of V.F.W. Post 8142 and American Legion Posst 184; a 50-year member of the Winterset Rotary Club; a 50 year member of Evening Star Masonic Lodge of Winterset; a Shriner, a director of Farmers & Merchants State Bank; chairman of the Winterset Cemetery Board; promoter, chairman, and organizer of Northward Plaza; a member of the American Contract Bridge League; and a member of the First United Presbyterian Church. He also served on the Winterset School Board and Chamber of Commerce and helped establish the current Madison County Historical Museum.

George was owner and operator of Montross Pharmacy in Winterset, Earlham and St. Charles. His current partners in the pharmacy are Jim Nelson and Jerry Schwertfeger. Montross Pharmacy has been in business for over 100 years. George Daniel Montross, George's grandfather, started the business in Sloan. Lloyd Montross, George's father, brought the business to Winterset in 1922. Stores have been located in Sloan and Indianola and are presently located in Winterset, Earlham and St. Charles.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, one son, Michael of Sacramento, Calif.; four daughters, Kaye Hart (husband Larry) of Atlanta, Ga., Raye Zeigler (husband Barry) of St. Louis, Mo., Pam LaShelle (husband Charles) of Austin, Texas, and Rebecca Coplan (husband Lee) of Winter Park, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
