DANIEL J. GALLERY - Winterset Attorney Dies at 67 Years

Daniel J. Gallery, a Winterset attorney for 30 years, died Saturday, April 18, (1964), at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, after an extended illness. He was 67 years of age.

His death closed a long career of service to this community in many fields. He was a former Madison county attorney, a former mayor of Winterset, and had served as city attorney for 37 years, among a myriad of other activities.

Mr. Gallery was born at Winthrop, Ia., on Dec. 9, 1896, a son of James A. and Teresa Kane Gallery. He graduated from Winthrop high school, and attended Loras college in Dubuque, where he received his B.A. degree in 1917.

During World War I he served in the U.S. armed forces, after which he enrolled in the State University of Iowa at Iowa City to study law. He graduated from the college of law at the university, with an LL.B. degree, in 1922, and was admitted to the Iowa bar that year. He was a life member of Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity.

Mr. Gallery started the practice of law in Winterset in 1925, continuing until his final illness.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, taking an active part in its affairs. He was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis there,and of the church choir.

Mr. Gallery was married Dec. 1, 1951, at Holy Family Catholic church in Davenport, to Marguerite York, who survives him.

He had served the Democratic party in Madison County during his life in this community. He was chairman of the County central committee for 26 years, before illness forced his retirement and was delegate to two national Democratic conventions.

Among the varied services and activities in which he participated in the community were: President of Fifth district Bar association in 1940, and of the Madison County Bar association from 1933 to 1963; member of Iowa Bar association; past commander of Green-Rogers post of the American Legion; member of World War I veterans organization; served on Madison county Selective Service board; member of Winterset Lions club since 1945; served on the local insane commission since 1946; member of Soldiers' Relief commission since 1926 and mayor of Winterset in 1948 and 1949, which included the Centennial year.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Vera Gallery of Manchester and Mrs. Gail Ives of Charles City. Another sister, Mrs. P.J. Callan, died in 1960.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from St. Joseph's Catholic church in Winterset, with requiem Mass celebrated by his pastor, the V.Rev. Msgr. John W. Higgins. Burial was made with military honors by Green Rogers post of the American Legion, in the Winterset Cemetery.
