Fred H. Crusan, 77, died Dec. 31, 2005, at St. Helena Hospital in St. Helena, Calif., from complications of diabetes. He had been a resident of the Veterans Home in Yountville, Calif., for the past several years.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan.12, at the Veterans Home in St. Helena. A second memorial service will be held in Des Moines at a later date.
Fred Crusan was born March 31, 1928, in Des Moines to Fay B. and Florence Crusan. He attended Roosevelt High School before enlisting in the Air Force, serving from 1946-49 – of which 22 months were spent on Guam. From 1950-53 he served with the United States Marine Corps, completing one year of duty in Korea and receiving two Purple Hearts. In 1953, he married Ardeth Williams of Winterset and was engaged in farming in the Winterset area. They later moved to Des Moines, Colorado and Arizona, where Fred worked for the school districts in each state. After remarrying he returned to Iowa, retiring from the Des Moines School District in 1987 and moving to Ehrenberg, Ariz. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Winterset.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Jane Crusan; one son, Scott Crusan; and three brothers, Howard, Edward, and Frank.
He is survived by one daughter, Nancy Diamond of Grand Ledge, Mich.; two sons, Todd Crusan of Avondale, Ariz., and Brent Crusan of Denver City, Texas; a sister, Virginia Linn of Austin, Texas; a brother, Francis Crusan of Des Moines; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
