Dr. Ivan K. Sayre, a practicing physician in St. Charles for 41 years, died at Iowa Lutheran hospital in Des Moines Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1954. He was 65 years of age.
Doctor Sayre had been in failing health for several months, but became critically ill Saturday, Nov. 13, with a condition involving internal bleeding. He was rushed to the hospital where his death occurred four days later.
Doctor Sayre was widely known through Madison and adjoining counties as a physician and a community leader. He was born and lived all his life at St. Charles. He was a member of the Iowa State and Madison County Medical societies. He was affiliated with the Masonic lodge and Lions club at St. Charles, and was a member of the Lakeview Country club at Winterset. In additon, he was a director of the Farmers and Merchants State bank at Winterset. He was a member of the St. Charles Methodist Church.
Dr. Sayre was born at St. Charles Sept. 7, 1889, a son of Samuel and Laura McLaughlin Sayre. He was a graduate of the college of medicine at Drake University in Des Moines.
His marriage to Jennie A. Anderson occurred on August 16, 1911, at Winterset. They always made their home in St. Charles and were parents of three sons. One of them, Harry K. Sayre, preceded his father in death.
Surviving are his wife; two sons, Jack Sayre of Des Moines and Rex Sayre of Davenport; five grandchildren; a brother, L. B. Sayre of Winterset; and two sisters, Mrs. J. C. Kessler of Iowa City and Mrs. Nydia McVay of Des Moines.
Funeral services were held Saturday from the St. Charles Methodist church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Eldon Hayworth. Burial was made in the St. Charles cemetery.
