MARIA BINGMAN BENSON

May 16, 1846 there came to the home of John and Nancy Bingman a blue eyed baby and they named her Maria. She, with her older brother and sisters lived in this home near West Newton, Indiana, until she was eight years old. Then with two other families they started with ox team and prairie schooner to a new home in Iowa.

They arrived in June and located in Dallas county north of the Bear Creek church. There they builded a new log cabin home and with other neighbors lived a real pioneer life. Many hardships had to be endured and she could always tell of the pathetic as well as the joyful events of these early days.

August 8, 1961 (1861) she was united in marriage to Jasper Benson and they established a home about four miles northeast of Earlham. Four children came to bring joy to this home Nancy Jane who passed away September 1st, 1880, Nevada Ann who passed in July 7th, 1927, Wm. N. whose death occured April 27th, 1937 and Ella Josie who lived with her mother and cared for until she passed on to her reward July 25th, 1938 in the 93rd year of her age. The husband and father preceded her in death June 18, 1918.

Nancy Jane at her death left two children Eva O. and Charles E. and she and her husband took them in their own home and raised them as their own. Early in their married life she and her husband were converted and joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church later transferring their membership to the Pleasant Hill United Brethern church. In the fall of 1900 they moved to their now home in Earlham where she transferred her membrship to the M. E. church under the pastorate of Eben A. thomas. She was a member of this church at the time of her death. Although ill health prevented her attending the services of the church she enjoyed the prayer services and family worship in her own home and one of her last prayers uttered when suffering so intensely was the one that the Lord Jesus would help her for she could not live without him. She was greatly concerned that all those of her family should seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. She rests from her labor and her works do follow her.
