Jno. N. Hartley, a lifetime resident of Madison County and a well-known attorney in this area died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines last Thursday, May 29, 1975. He was 74 years of age.
Mr. Hartley was born in Madison County on December 21, 1900, the son of Edmund D. and Laverna Ellen Smith Hartley. He was educated in the Winterset school system, and later graduated from St. Louis University.
Mr. Hartley was admitted to the Bar on April 14, 1924, and practiced law in Winterset for the next 51 years. He was a charter member of the Winterset Lions Club and was a past president of that organization. He also served on the board of trustees of the Madison County Memorial Hospital from 1945 to 1972. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Winterset.
Mr. Hartley was married to Lois Martin, who survives him, at Rockford, Illinois, on July 14, 1949. He is also survived by one son, John K. Hartley, and one daughter, Michaelyn Hartley, both of Winterset.
Preceding him in death were his parents and one brother.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 31, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset, with Monsignor William J. McMahon officiating. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
A Rosary was recited at 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
