Death of Alex Montgomery

Van Meter, May 8. Special - Alex Montgomery died at his home Tuesday morning, May 7th. He had been in frail health the past seven years, but had been especially failing since the first of this year. He was 83 years old and was born near Terre Haute, Indiana. He served his country in the Third Iowa Cavalry during the Civil war, and his passing took the last Civil war veteran from the town of Van Meter. He married Addie Brack in Des Moines in 1871, and 51 years of their married life had been spent in this community. He leaves his wife, five daughters, Mrs. John Lanning and Mrs. M. A. Pierce of Van Meter; Mrs. Bert Aldrich of Ruthven; Mrs. Fayette Croft of Linden, and Mrs. Estella Bullard of Cedar Rapids, and two sons, Harry Montgomery of Adel, and Bert O. Montgomery of Des Moines, and a half-brother in Indiana. The funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal church, Thursday afernoon at 2:30 o'clock, with the burial in the Thornton cemetery.
