Funeral services was held Tuesday, June 29, 1982 at First United Methodist Church in Winterset for Rev. Walter A. Samp of Winterset, who died June 26 at Bethesda Care Center. He was 92 years old.
Born in Custer county, Nebraska on Jan. 14, 1890, he was the son of Christian and Mary Pike Samp.
On Sept. 15, 1918, he married Ruby Rasmussen in Grandfield, Oklahoma. Two sons were born to this couple.
Rev. Samp moved to Winterset in 1940, serving as pastor of the First United Methodist Church from 1940-46. He was an active minister for over 37 years, receiving an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Simpson College in Indianola. He also served as conference treasurer for the church from 1932-46 and was a past Methodist District Superintendent of the Creston District.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 9 brothers and 3 sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby, two sons, William of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Thomas of LaHabra, Calif.; and three grandchildren.
Rev. Byron Ayers officiated at the funeral service. Burial was in the Winterset Cemetery.
