CARL BEELER, Truro

Carl Eugene Beeler, 83, of Truro died Jan. 6, 2006. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 10, at the Truro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sandy Smith officiating. Burial was at Ebenezer Cemetery, Walnut Township, Madison County, with military rites performed by members of the United States Marine Corps, assisted by VFW Post 184 of Winterset.

Carl Beeler was born Jan. 8, 1922, in Walnut Township, Madison County, to Otto Ray and Nina Belle (Porter) Beeler. He attended Garret Country School through eighth grade, graduating from Truro High School in 1939. Following graduation, he farmed with his father until enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1943, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II under Regimental Combat Team 8, Second Marine Division. His tour of duty included combat operations on Saipan, Okinawa and Tinian. He was the recipient of a Presidential Unit Citation for combat action on Saipan. In later years, he dedicated time speaking to students about his World War II experiences "Lest We Forget". In the summer of 2000, he walked 250 miles to the Veterans Memorial Dedication at Soldiers Field in Rochester, Minn., as a tribute to the fighting men who never returned home. Following the war, Carl returned to farming, and also completed "Institutional on Farm" course work. On Nov. 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Louise Swan. Throughout his lifetime, he was active in many church and civic organizations. He had been a county committee member of the ASCS, member of the Madison County Extension Council, Madison County Shorthorn Association, Truro School Board of Education, Iowa Farm Safety Council, and Truro United Methodist Church. He was the recipient of various awards and recognition for his livestock and crop production practices. He also was involved in the lives of area youth as a Sunday school teacher, founding member of the Truro Saddle Club, and 4-H leader.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Josephine Neidt.

He is survived by his wife, Louise, of Truro; one daughter, Carla Burhans of St. Charles; four sons, Tim Beeler of Winterset, Rod Beeler of St. Charles, Dennis Beeler of Truro and Mike Beeler of Perry; a brother, Bill Beeler of Panora; and 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kale Funeral Homes of Osceola and Truro.

Carl Eugene Beeler

Carl Eugene Beeler, son of Otto Ray and Nina Belle Porter Beeler, was born Jan. 8, 1922, at their home in Walnut Township southwest of Truro, and died Jan. 6, 2006. He was 83.

He attended Garret Country School near his home through eighth grade. He graduated from the Truro High School in 1939. Following graduation, he farmed with his father until enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in 1943. After military service, he also completed “Institutional on Farm” course work. He served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II under Regimental Combat Team 8, Second Marine Division. His tour of duty included combat operations on Saipan, Okinawa and Tinian. He received a Presidential Unit Citation for combat action on Saipan. He was honorably discharged as an acting gunnery sergeant in 1946.

Following the war, he returned to farming. He married Dorothy Louise Swan on Nov. 28, 1946. Five children were born to this union. Throughout his lifetime, Mr. Beeler was active in many church and civic organizations. He had been a county committee member of the ASCS member of the Madison County Extension Council, Madison County Shorthorn Association, Truro School Board of Education, and Iowa Farm Safety Council.

He was the recipient of various awards and recognitions for his livestock and crop production practices. He was a member of the Truro United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed his involvement and influence in the lives of area youth as a Sunday School teacher, founding member of the Truro Saddle Club, and especially as a 4-H leader and show ring competitor at the Madison County fair.

His military service to his country was a source of great pride to him, and in later years, he dedicated time speaking to students about his experiences during World War II, “Lest We Forget.” His patriotism was manifested in the summer of 2000 when he walked 250 miles to the Veterans Memorial Dedication at Soldier’s Field in Rochester, Minn., as a tribute to the fighting men who never returned home.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Josephine Neidt.

He is survived by wife Louise of Truro; children, Carla Burhans and husband, Dick of St. Charles; Tim Beeler and wife, Julie of Winterset; Rod Beeler and wife, Karen, of St. Charles; Dennis Beeler and wife, Roxanne of Truro; Mike Beeler, and wife, Kathleen of Perry; grandchildren, Heidi Burhans of St. Charles; Lyndsay Cannoy and her husband, Roger, of Hendersonville, Tenn.; Mary Burhans of Chicago, Ill.; Maggie Strable and husband, Joshua, of Ithaca, N.Y.; Nissa and Abigail Beeler of Iowa City; Alex Beeler of Winterset; Allison Beeler of Tampa, Fla.; Sgt. Mitchell Beeler and wife, Jenny, of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; Fletcher Beeler of St Charles; Heather Beeler of Indianola; Katie Beeler of Ames; Calli Beeler of Truro; Charlie and Emily Beeler of Perry; great-grandchildren, Charles Cannoy of Hendersonville, Teen., and Brock Beeler of Camp Lejeune, N.C.; brother, Bill Beeler and wife, Donna, of Panora as well as many other relative and friends.

Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Truro on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, the Rev. Sandy Smith of St. Charles officiating. Doris Johnson accompanied Terry Smith who sang How Great Thou Art, Peace In The Valley and The Last Roundup.

Casket bearers were Tim Beeler, Rod Beeler, Dennis Beeler, Mike Beeler, Dick Burhans, Alex Beeler, Sgt. Mitchell Beeler, Fletcher Beeler and Charlie Beeler. Honorary casket bearers were Clem Henderson, Glenn Miller, Bill Beeler, Ed Swan, Larry Beeler, Dale Swan and Fred Thomas.

Military graveside services were presented by members of the United States Marine Corps., assisted by V.F.W. Post No. 184-Winterset. Interment was in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Madison County.
