G. M. D. Proctor, a son of William and Jane Proctor, born September 13, 1844, in Butler county, Ohio, passed away at his home in Greenfield, June 24, 1928, at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 10 days.
When a child he moved with his parents to Franklin county, Indiana. The first five years he lived with his grandparents. He received his education in the schools of the county and was considered a well educated man. On January 19, 1865 he was united in marriage to Nancy A. Alexander. To this union seven children were born, William of Mapleton, Perry H. of Greenfield; John of Norfolk, Virginia; Rosa A. Williamson of Ontario, Oregon; Minnie Jane Fredricks of Winterset; Laura Gay Wright, Fillmore, Indiana; Mamey Eva May who died in infancy. He moved his family from Indiana to Iowa in a covered wagon the year of 1870, settled in Grand River township, Adair county, where he continued to live and where he held many township offices. He was a member of the Congregational church, superintendent of the Sunday school and conducted many of the services, both funeral and otherwise, whenever the community was without a pastor. He was ever ready to assist his neighbors and lend them a helping hand. His wife and the mother of his children passed away in 1880, and for a few years he was father and mother to his children, and did his work well. September 8, 1887, he was married to Mary A. Smith, who passed away in the year 1890. March 1, 1891, he was married to Sarah Killam. This couple have lived together for 37 years. He was a member of the Masonic order for 55 years. For the last three years he had been a great sufferer and during the last year he was faithfully cared for by Mr. and Mrs. Perry Proctor. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife and children, 24 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren and a host of friends. One sister passed away one month before and he has one brother, Enoch Proctor, living at Fillmore, Indiana.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Tuesday, June 26, by the Rev. Keast, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Bosham of the Orient Congregational church. Orient Masonic services were conducted at the grave. Interment was made in the Rock City cemetery.
