The community was profoundly saddened this evening to learn of the death of one of its most esteemed citizens, Mr. J. H. Bartell, who succumbed to pneumonia at about 7:30 p.m. His death comes with almost paralyzing suddenness to the wife, the children in the west and a host of local friends. A week before his death Mr. Bartell was in normal health.

He was a man who took an extraordinary interest in life and its activities. Only a week ago some of us were playing with him at horseshoes, a game which he enjoyed immensely. It is by such simple things that we remember those whom best we love. On Friday he felt the first symptoms of what appeared to be an attack of pleurisy, and by the first of the week it was evident that dread pneumonia had taken possession of his somewhat frail constitution. The sufferer passed a severe night Wednesday, and with one lung completely involved and respiration becoming steadily more difficult, hope of recovery ebbed away. The serum treatment was applied as a last resort, but disease had advanced too far, and death finally came as a relief to Mr. Bartell’s suffering this evening.

Funeral arrangements cannot be given at this time. Burial will probably be at the old home at Harrison, Nebr. A daughter Miss Dotha Bartell arrived on number 14 this evening from Wyoming, the train stopping here by special permission. She missed seeing her father in this world by only about two hours.
