Myrtle Ethel Thomas, daughter of James B. and Elizabeth H. Thomas, was born September 10, 1886 at Sheldon, Iowa, and passed away March 11, 1963, in the Madison County Memorial Hospital, Winterset, at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 1 day.
When a child, she moved with her parents to Dexter. She became a member of the Dexter Methodist Church in 1898. She was a long-time member of the Woman's Society of Christian Service and a member of the Stuart American Legion Auxiliary. After finishing her education at the Dexter Normal School, she taught in rural schools.
On May 1, 1907, she was united in marriage to Dewey Melvin Barr. They started farming on a farm near Menlo. After two years at Menlo, they moved to their present home south of Dexter. To this union were born five children; Dwight of Dexter, Duane of Dexter, Helen Hibbs of Earlham, Charles H. of Redfield, and Max of Stuart.
Besides her parents, Myrtle was preceded in death by her three brothers; Jimmie, George and Willie, also three sisters; Lillie Waters, Clara Salisbury and Laura Nolte.
She is survived by her husband, Mel; her five children; two sisters; Mrs. Maud Mills of Des Moines and Mrs. Millie French of Guthrie Center who has lived in the Barr home the last several years caring for her. Also by eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She was a loving wife, a devoted mother and a friend to all who knew her.
Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church of Dexter on March 14, with the Rev. John Latta officiating, directed by Evans Funeral Homes. Interment was at the Dexter Cemetery. Robert Lawson played several musical selections on the organ.
