Earlham Echo - March 25, 1976

Gladys Christina Patten was born on November 29, 1900 to Robert Erwin Newton and Edith May Kann Newton, in Poweshiek County, Brooklyn, Iowa.

All her childhood and youth was spent at Brooklyn. Gladys became a graduate of the high school there in 1918.

At age twelve in 1912, Gladys became obedient to our Lord and was baptized by immersion in the local creek by Pastor Henderson of the United Brethren congregation.

On February 2, 1921, Gladys was joined in marriage to L. O. Patten in Des Moines during a double marriage ceremony enjoined by Paul Patten and his bride.

Six years later, the Pattens moved to Earlham where they have resided since 1927. The Pattens were engaged in business, working together in farm produce, buying and selling cream and eggs.

On June 3, 1934, the Lord blessed this union with a 6 week old adopted daughter, Donna.

Upon moving to Earlham Gladys and Pat became immediate active members of the Church of Christ. Gladys was also a member of the Eastern Star for 48 years. She further became active in the local Care program from its inception.

On Friday, March 19, 1976, Gladys suddenly passed away from this life following a week's hospitalization. She was preceded in death by her parents, her mother leaving this life only a scant week ago on March 11.

Surviving her are her husband Pat; one daughter Donna, Mrs. Gene Golightly of Dexter; two brothers: C. D. Newton of Conrad, Iowa, and Earle R. Newton, of Waynesville, N. Carolina; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and 2 nephews.

Last rites were conducted by Bernard Zylstra at the Church of Christ in Earlham on Monday, March 22. A special services was provided by the Earlham Capter, Order of the Eastern Star.

Linda Applegate was at the organ console. Honorary casket bearers were Marion Compton, Les Goeldner, Ralph Hunter, Guy Moore, Earl Schalkle and Stanley Williamson. Casket bearers were Charles Anker, Harold Frey, John Henkle, Orie Jones, Roger Newton and Albin Olson.

Interment was in the Earlham Cemetery. McKee Funeral Home made the arrangements.
