Caroline McNeil, Winterset

Caroline "Calla" McNeil, one of the remaining descendants of pioneer settlers of Madison County, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1982, at the age of 101 years, at Westview Care Center in Indianola.

Mrs. McNeil was born in Winterset on Dec.15, 1880 the daughter of Mary Ann McGee and Carson Perkins. Her earlier years were spent in Madison County until 1906 when she married Harry Hallam McNeil of Indianola. Her husband was an attorney and also coached football at Simpson College. He died in 1950. Soon after she moved to an apartment in Indianola and remained there until this past year she entered the care center due to her health.

In 1980, on her 100th birthday, Mrs. McNeil was the proud recipient of a Century Farm award, presented by Secretary of Agriculture, Robert Lounsberry, for land in Madison County her grandfather, M. M. McGee, purchased more than 100 years ago. She retained title to and took an active interest in this land all of her life.

Mrs. McNeil was a member of P.E.O., and First United Methodist Church of Indianola.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one brother, Matthew Perkins. Survivors are three nieces,Charlotte Flannery of Winterset, Paul Perkins of Green Bay, Wis. and Alice Schuchat of Des Moines, their families and cousins.

At her request, the body was cremated and private services will be held at the convenience of the family with burial at the Winterset Cemetery. The family suggests any memorials might be made to the Methodist Church of Indianola.
