Ethel L. Armstrong, Earlham

Ethel Lorraine Armstrong, 80, of Earlham died of a heart attack Jan. 11, 2002, at her home.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 17, at Penn Center United Methodist church with the Rev. Alberta Ervin officiating. Burial was at Mcdonald-Chase Cemetery, Douglas Township, Madison County.

Ethel Armstrong was born Aug. 20, 1921, in Union Township, Madison County, to William and Verna (Leach) McNichols. A 1940 graduate of Patterson High School, she moved to Des Moines and worked in a glove factory as an inspector during World War II. She also worked in the auto department of the Madison County Treasuer's Office. On Feb. 3, 1950, she married Mervyn Armstrong in Des Moines. Ethel was a member of the Penn Center United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two sisters.

She is survived by two daughters, Loretta Belknap of Hemingford, Ne., and Linda Algreen of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a son, Kenneth armstrong of Amboy, Wash.; three brothers, Wilbur McNichols of Winterset, Willard McNichols of Bloomington, Ind., and Kenneth McNichols of Bondurant; two sisters, Lucile Loomis and Blanche White, both of Winterset; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kuhn funeral Homes of Dexter and Earlham.
