S. S. McKIBBEN

Samuel Spencer McKibben, youngest son of Samuel and Mary Laymen McKibben was born in Dallas County, Iowa, February 15, 1859.

With the exception of a little more than one year spent in Earlham, his entire life of 79 years, 11 months, and 10 days was lived on the old homestead where he passed away January 25, 1939.

On December 25, 1878, he was united in marriage to Lily Ann Mark, who preceded him in death four years ago. To this union was born six children; Dell Cook of Earlham; Byron B. and Scott of Des Moines; Carrell of Boise, Idaho; Mae Middleton and Veta McClaren of Des Moines.

He united with the United Brethern Church at Hickory Grove when quite young, giving his life to active service for his master, both as preacher and teacher. When the church at Hickory Grove was closed he transferred his membership to Panther Creek. For the past few years, he attended the M. E. Church at Earlham serving as teacher of the men's class.

A lover of nature, he had much pleasure in the care of his homestead, his crops and his livestock

He was of a quiet reserved nature, yet ever ready to lend a helping hand, give a word of praise, or perhaps a kindly rebuke.

His strength of character made itself manifest in the way he met disappointments and when disease began to undermine his health, he quietly and cheerfully met the pain that came.

He leaves to mourn his death, besides the six children, thirteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at the home on Friday at 2:00 o'clock. Mrs. Nora Craven and Mrs. Mabel Hildreth having charge. Two of his favorite songs, "It is Well with My Soul" and "Shall We Gather at the River?" were sung by Mrs. Marks and Mrs. Soderberg. Pallbearers were four grandsons and two nephews: Otha Cook, Shirley McClaren, Max and Jack Middleton, Claude and Paul Mark. He was laid to rest in the McKibben Cemetery which joins the old homestead.
