Russell Curnes, Winterset

Russell J. Curnes, 73,of Winterset, died of cancer Jan. 9, 1995 at the Hospice Kavanaugh House in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held Jan. 12 at 10:30 a.m. at Collins Funeral Home in Winterset. The Rev. John Shaull will officiate the ceremony. Burial and Military graveside services will be held at the Winterset Cemetery. A family visitation will be held tonight, Wednesday, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born in Creston on May 19, 1921 to Harley and Bessie (Christensen) Curnes. He married Evelyn
Misner on Sept. 29, 1946 in Winterset. He was a retired salesman for Farm Services. He had spent most of his lifetime in Winterset. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a member of the V. F. W. Post No. 8142 and the American Legion Post No. 184, both of Winterset. He had served in the Marine Corps during World War II. He was assigned on seven major invasions in the Pacific during the war including Kiska; Tarawa; Marshall Islands, Saipan; Tinian; Iowa Jima; and Sasebo.

He was preceded in death by his father. Surviving relatives include his wife Evelyn of Winterset; two sons, Ron Curnes and wife Sharon of Des Moines and Gary Curnes and wife Mary of Waukee; one daughter, Linda Counter and husband Vern of West Milford, New Jersey; his mother, Bessie Curnes of Winterset; one brother, Wayne Curnes of Des Moines seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
