Winterset Madisonian - August 7, 1991

Louis James King, 78, well-known Madison County resident, died at his home Fri., Aug. 2 of cancer. Funeral services were held Mon. Aug. 5 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Winterset, of which he was a member. Father Frank Palmer officiated at the funeral. Visitation, rosary and Scripture service were held Sunday for family and friends.

Born May 4, 1913 in Warren County to Joseph Patrick and Mary Margaret (Dooley) King, he lived most of his adult life in Madison County.

He married Anna Catherine McKinney October 23, 1935; and 13 children were born to this union. He was engaged in farming most of his life and had retired from B.B. & P. Feed and Grain Winterset. Previously, he had worked for the former Reed's Elevator Company.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Joseph, Walter, John, Charles and George; and a sister, Teresa Bishop.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Patrick and wife, Barbara, of rural Prole, Gerald and wife, Beverly, of rural Lorimor; Leo and wife, Lisa, of Winterset and Thomas and wife, Betty, of rural Earlham; nine daughters, Margaret Barker and husband Richard, Luella Fairholm and husband, Richard, Nancy Stephenbson and husband, Gene, and Juanita Beeler and husband, Tom, all of Winterset; Carolyn Rothfus and husband, Lyle, and Kathleen Churchill and husband, Keith, all of Carlisle; Barbara Birdsell and husband, Alan of Buckeye, Ariz.; Dorothy Wedemeyer and husband, Rodney, of rural St. Charles and Rita Drysdale and husband, Michael, of Murray, Utah; 34 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Burial was at St. Patrick's Irish Settlement Church Cemetery in Madison County. Memorial contributions may be made to the Winterset Public Library or to the American Cancer Society.
