JOHN ATKINS Winterset

John M. Atkins, 80 of Winterset died of leukemia Friday at Madison Square there. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ochiltree Funeral Service and Aftercare in Winterset.

Burial, with military rites, will be at Winterset Cemetery.

Mr. Atkins was born in Adel and had lived in Fairfield Bay, Ark., before moving to Winterset a year ago. He was a retired Air Force major, a veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Retired Officers Association. He enjoyed golf and bowling.

He is survived by his wife, Grace; a daughter, Sheila Newlin of Tulsa, Okla; four sons, John of Columbus, Neb., Thomas of Bartelsville, Okla., Richard of Denton, Neb. and James of Rantoul, Ill.; three sisters, Ellen Root of Winterset, Maxine Handel of Mount Vernon, Ind., and Martha Hartman of Bend, Ore.; four grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Middle River Hospice of Winterset.
