John William Foster, 82, of Winterset died Dec. 13, 1998 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday Dec. 17, at Collins Funeral Home in interset with Pastor Lyle Kuehl officiating. Burial will be at Winterset Cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16.

John Foster was born Jan. 7, 1916, in Madison County to Glenn Alexander and Lora Tabitha (Cooter) Foster. He was a 1933 graduate of Winterset High School. He married Mary Bellman in 1938 in Madison County. Mary died in May 1983. He then married Jean Eyerly Oct. 30, 1985, in Orient. A lifetime resident and a Navy veteran of World War II, he was a retired farmer and loan department officer for Union State Bank. He also owned a neighborhood grocery one year in 1939 and worked as a traveling salesman for Brown-Camp Hardware in Des Moines two years. John served nine years as director of the Farmers Electric Co-op of Greenfield, was a 53 year member and past commander of Green Rogers American Legion Post 148, a past sergeant of arms for the 6th District Legion in Iowa, a 60-year member of Evening Star Masonic Lodge in Winterset, a life member of the American Angus Asso, a life member of the Madison County Historical Society, and a member of the United Church of Christ in Orient, Iowa.

He is survived by his wife Jean; a son, Mike Foster (wife Susan) of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Flora Bailey of Pella; a stepson, Gary Eyerly (wife Beverly) of Des Moines; three step-daughters, Carol Shinn (husband Gary) of Ellston, Marjorie Eyerly of Eureka, Mo., and Lois Pals (husband Dale) of Orient; a sister, Beverly Ham (husband Dale) of Winterset; 9 grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 23 stepgreat-grandchildren; and 1 stepgreat-great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the United Church of Christ in Orient.
