Paul L. Griffith, 88, of Winterset, died May 3, 2002, of pulmonary fibrosis at Winterset Care Center South.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 6, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Father Chris Hartshorn officiating. The body was donated to the Des Moines University Medical Center.
Paul Griffith was born April 1, 1914, in Madison County to Ersie and Edna (Chase) Griffith. He was a graduate of Winterset High School. In 1941, he married Mary Houston. Paul spent 37 years as an oil jobber with Poland-Griffith Oil Company (associated with Phillips 66) retiring in 1979. A life-long resident of Madison County, he had resided in Winterset for 70 years.
He was a member of the Winterset Lions Club (perfect attendance for 48 years) and had served on the boards for Madison County Memorial Hospital, North Ward Plaza, Earlham Care and the Winterset and Chase-McDonald cemeteries. He also served many years as a bookkeeper for St.Joseph Catholic Church,17 years as a volunteer for the Service Corps of Retired Executives (Score) counseling business owners and several years coaching boys' and girls' Little League. His desire to see others attend college, led him to establish, in 1982, the Paul and Mary Griffith Scholarship Fund for Winterset High School seniors
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a special friend, Phyllis Pace.
He is survived by two daughters, Shirley Cunningham (husband P.J.) and Linda Smith (husband Jim), both of Winterset; a son Phil Griffith of Steamboat Springs, Colo; two sisters, Mary Busch of Long Beach, Calif., and Kathryn Haymond of Macksburg, a brother, Wayne "Doc" Griffith (wife Jodi) of Winterset; a sister-in-law, Thodora "Ted" Griffith of Des Moines; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Madison County Memorial Hospital or St. Joseph Catholic Church, both of Winterset.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
