Bertsel Leslie Powell

Bertsel Leslie, son of A. F. and Maggie Powell, was born near Winterset, Iowa, September 18, 1897. As a boy he attended the Holliwell school and his entire life has been lived in the Holliwell neighborhood.

He was married to Gertrude C. Keller April 6, 1921. One son, Edward Alonzo, aged six years, was born to them.

Bertsel united with the United Brethren church at a very early age. A few years ago he became a member of the Pocket Testament League and no matter how tired he was when night came he read his daily chapter in the Bible. When in his last illness, he became too weak to read for himself, he would have his wife read the daily chapter to him. This was typical of his Christian life, that until the very end he was anxious to quietly do his Savior's will - and his whole life was one of friendly, kindly love for those about him. He passed away at his home after a brief illness, December 24, 1928, aged 31 years, 3 months and 6 days.

He leaves beside his wife and son and parents, one brother, Harian, and three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Neal, Myrtle and Flora Powell, and many other relatives and friends.

Rev. A. P. Keast, assisted by Rev. W. C. Porter, conducted the funeral service in the M. E. church in Winterset, Wednesday afternoon, December 26, and the interment was in the Union Chapel cemetery.
